Moonshot Unveils Kimi K3, World’s Largest Open-Weight AI Model as China Narrows Gap With US Rivals

China's artificial intelligence industry reached another milestone on Friday after Moonshot AI introduced Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter multimodal model that the company describes as the world's largest open-weight AI system.

The launch highlights the rapid pace of China’s AI development, with domestic firms increasingly challenging leading U.S. developers in advanced reasoning, coding, and agent-based applications.

Kimi K3 targets frontier AI performance

Moonshot said Kimi K3 is built for complex reasoning, software engineering, autonomous agents, and knowledge-intensive workloads. The model features a one million-token context window, enabling it to analyze substantially larger documents and conversations within a single prompt.

The company also introduced two new technologies designed to improve efficiency. Kimi Delta Attention delivers up to 6.3-times faster decoding for long-context tasks, while Attention Residuals improves training efficiency by roughly 25%.

Moonshot said Kimi K3 performed competitively with Anthropic’s Fable 5 model while outperforming OpenAI’s GPT-5.5, GPT-5.6 Sol and Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 in GPU kernel optimization, a benchmark measuring how efficiently AI models utilize graphics processors.

Independent benchmarks show strong results

Third-party evaluations also placed the model among the industry’s top performers.

Arena.ai ranked Kimi K3 first for web interface-building capabilities, while Vals AI placed it second overall behind Fable 5. Artificial Analysis reported that Kimi K3 achieved performance comparable to OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 on complex multi-step reasoning tasks.

The release comes as Chinese AI companies accelerate development cycles. Earlier this year, Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 attracted attention after approaching the performance of leading U.S. closed-source models. MiniMax is also preparing a 2.7 trillion-parameter model alongside its upcoming multimodal H3 system.

The latest release signals China’s growing presence in frontier AI development as competition among global model developers continues to intensify.
