Galaxy Digital Moves $160M in Bitcoin as Empery Digital Sells 1,400 BTC to Fund AI Expansion
Institutional Bitcoin activity drew renewed attention this week after Galaxy Digital moved approximately 2,500 BTC, valued at around $160 million, across multiple wallets, while Empery Digital confirmed it had sold 1,400 BTC to finance an artificial intelligence infrastructure project and strengthen its balance sheet.
The two developments highlight different approaches to Bitcoin treasury management. While Galaxy Digital’s on-chain transfers have prompted market speculation over their purpose, Empery Digital disclosed that its sale forms part of a broader capital allocation strategy focused on AI data centers rather than expanding its Bitcoin holdings.
Galaxy Digital Transfers 2,500 BTC Across Multiple Wallets
Blockchain tracking data shows Galaxy Digital transferred roughly 2,500 BTC through several transactions within a short period on July 10. The transfers included movements between Galaxy-controlled wallets as well as deposits to Wintermute, Coinbase, and Kraken.

The company has not publicly commented on the transactions.
Large Bitcoin transfers from institutional firms are closely monitored because deposits to exchanges can sometimes precede sales or liquidity operations. However, on-chain data alone does not confirm whether assets are being sold, as similar transfers may also represent internal treasury management, custody changes, or market-making activities.
At the time of the transfers, Bitcoin traded near $64,000, leaving market participants watching for any indication that the coins could enter the spot market.
Empery Digital Reduces Bitcoin Treasury to Back AI Expansion
Unlike Galaxy Digital’s undisclosed transfers, Empery Digital outlined exactly why it sold part of its Bitcoin reserves.
The Nasdaq-listed company announced it sold 1,400 BTC at an average price of $62,200, generating approximately $87.1 million in proceeds.

According to the company, the funds will be used to repay $10 million in debt, cover legal expenses, and contribute $65 million toward acquiring a 25% ownership stake in a U.S. AI data center project.
Despite the sale, Empery continues to hold 1,514 BTC, worth close to $100 million based on current market prices, in addition to approximately $74 million in cash.
The transaction marks a strategic shift for the company, which previously raised more than $500 million to build a Bitcoin treasury after pivoting from its former electric vehicle business.
Empery also indicated that it does not currently plan to increase its Bitcoin holdings and may sell additional BTC if future investment opportunities require capital.
Commenting on the company’s direction, co-CEO Ryan Lane said:
“Going forward, we plan to continue to allocate capital to similar hyperscaler-anchored opportunities.”
Bitcoin Treasury Strategy Evolves
Empery’s decision reflects a broader trend among some Bitcoin treasury companies formed during the digital asset boom in 2025.

Several firms that accumulated large Bitcoin positions through mergers or capital raises have since faced steep declines in their share prices as cryptocurrency markets corrected from record highs. Rather than continuing to accumulate Bitcoin, some companies are beginning to monetize portions of their holdings to fund new business initiatives or improve liquidity.
Following the announcement, Empery Digital’s Nasdaq-listed shares (EMPD) gained roughly 1% on the day. Even so, the stock remains significantly below its 2025 highs after a prolonged decline.
Bitcoin Price Holds Near Key Technical Levels
Bitcoin was trading around $64,200 in mid-July, posting modest daily gains while remaining in a relatively narrow trading range.
Technical indicators present a mixed picture. Short-term moving averages continue to lean bullish, with Bitcoin trading above several 10-, 20-, and 30-period exponential moving averages, suggesting near-term momentum remains constructive.

However, the broader trend remains less favorable. Bitcoin continues to trade below its 50-, 100-, and 200-period moving averages, indicating that the longer-term corrective structure is still intact.
Momentum indicators also point to a balanced market. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) remains near neutral territory, while the MACD has issued a buy signal. Other oscillators, including momentum and Bull Bear Power, continue to generate mixed readings, reflecting the market’s ongoing consolidation.
Key technical levels remain in focus. Analysts are watching resistance around $65,300, where a sustained breakout could strengthen bullish momentum. On the downside, support levels near $61,800 and $59,700 may become important if selling pressure increases.
Institutional Activity Remains in Focus
The contrasting moves by Galaxy Digital and Empery Digital illustrate how institutional participants are managing digital asset portfolios in different ways.
Galaxy’s transfers have drawn attention because of their size and destination, but without confirmation from the company, the transactions cannot be interpreted as evidence of imminent selling.
Empery, meanwhile, has openly repositioned part of its Bitcoin treasury to finance long-term investments in AI infrastructure. Together, the developments underscore how institutional firms are increasingly treating Bitcoin not only as a strategic reserve asset but also as a source of capital that can be deployed to support broader corporate objectives, depending on market conditions and business priorities.
